went to an avril lavigne concert
got a job as a lifeguard
saved two drowning kids
went to panama city
got a really dark tan
qualified for 4 events in the junior olympics
taught swim lessons (all of my kids except for one passed!)
Met a really hot guy at JOs (yup david you know who im talkin bout :-P)
spent LOTS of time hangin with my best friends
got my wisdom teeth taken out
ate benets at cafe du monde
had really awsome birthday party
got to see my cousin laura
dyed my hair puple
My sorta cousin Elisha, put green yellow, and black streaks in my hair
went to the mix only three times (not that many cute boys there)
me and farra have spent at least every other saturday at the mall
farra helped me get in plenty of driving time;-)
got a BB time in my 50m freestyle
got a hena tattoo
accomplished a back dive (still working on inverted)
got hit on by a good 30 guys (no, sorry the eight year olds at the Scott City pool don't count)
learned tarot
WENT to the junior olympics which was held in New Orleans
went for too many joy rides to count
went canoeing with farra
got whistled at by a fourty year old guy (Eeeeew!)
dropped three seconds on my 100 meter backstroke :-D
got the most perfect kiss....

The Killer

I mean, hey, I love Brian De Palma and Seijun Suzuki and Jean-Luc Godard (yes, the parodist) and Quentin Tarantino more than anyone (any other filmmakers? any other lovers? both.), but not until John Woo's The Killer did I realize that anyone could actually come up with that sort of proposterous pop-bang-(gee)-whiz (violent, violent) euphoria with a child's naïveté, and here, then, is pretty good proof that these guys don't have to be (but can be!) self-conscious (not ironic) to pump (and I mean that word in all its connotations) the viewer (up) (and down) with their pure and purely impossible dreams (ok, so I saw the b-noir Detour a couple nights ago, and liked that more, and it's proof too, and Woo certainly lacks the visual artistry of the first four guys up there, and even Edward Ulmer, but yes, this is a fuckin' action movie that even with all its quick edits and slow motions is blowing all other action movies (all other fuckin' action movies) to smithereens, so we'll discuss this in the epiphanic terms in which I received it, yes).

Hear hear, here we go: Woo (whoo Woo!) fucks up standard conventions as well as Godard ever did, whether he's doling out melodramatic heavily-synthed flashbacks to a scene that occurred about a minute ago, surrounding a church with propane tanks (and saturating it with his signature doves), or letting his leads use their completely shot-up arms and hands and legs (as in Collateral) to shoot up whatever arms and hands and legs are around them (it's all metaphysics in this world - they'll die when they need to, and they know it). He fills his human puppets with lead, and his sets with their blood, making each new kill a riff off the last, as never-ending legions of warriors clad in white business suits ("to hide themselves," my father noted) line up in doorways to take turns getting murdered by our two impetuous heroes, a sentimental hit-man (Chow Yun-Fat) in love with the girl whom he blinded when he had to shoot through her head to make a kill, and a tough-minded samurai cop (Danny Lee). At the heart (attack) of the thing is their friendship, and Woo smartly doesn't burden us with a backstory of who exactly the hit-man's evil employer is, or anything that might let us distinguish between the fact that the hit-man's killing innocent men (at first) for money, and the cop evildoers for justice. To Woo, either way is still the murder of a human being and an excuse for a totally kickass sequence. It's an automatic (no-brainer, then?) kitsch catch - and I mean that lovingly, or, lustfully, anyway.

OH! i just got back from my vacation and i REALLY wish it wasn't over! i was having such a perfect time. i love going south! its all nice and warm down there. the guys are hot too... but there was one in particular this summer that im really going to miss....... but ill get to that later. it all started on thursday july 28th. i was getting ready to head to work and my mom decides out of the blue that we should leave for vacation a day earlier than planned. i started to protest because i hadn't even started packing my bags yet or gotten my paycheck yet. and i needed money for the trip. i didn't have to worry i got my paycheck at work that day and just made up a list of things to pack on my break so i wouldn't have to rush and miss anything when i packed. so i almost slept walked through the day. mary lou decided that we could close early considering there were less than 10 people there so i closed at 5:30 and i went home to start on packing right away. i asked luaren to pretty please feed elvis (he never ate. he wasn't hungry because he was getting ready to shed.) and then we were ready to go in less than thirty minutes. every one else had packed while i was at work. i listened to music and slept for most of the trip and lauren brought her DVD player with her so we watched a few movies. we stayed at a cheep hotel in tennessee before moving onto the beach the next day. we only drove for about 4 hours the next day to get to panama city beach. seth had warned me about panama. he sed i would LOVE it. he was right. supossedly last time he was there it was with his youth group and his preacher got flashed! lol! i enjoyed my self. the paza is THE place to hang out. and then teenage guys drive by in thier trucks and check out girls on the strip or by the plaza. my and lauren got whistled and yelled at alot! i wish guys reacted like that at HOME! that would be wicked but it would get very annoying after a while. one guy even yelled at me (and i was standing right next to my dad by the way) "Hey cuttie! watcha doin tonight. holla back girl! you could be my queen!" and then the guy drove off. my dad was almost in shock. i was laughing so hard! lauren was laughing too but mostly at the look on dads face. the guy in the surf shop (my favroite shop on the strip) called me the "girl with pretty legs" and i gotta admitt he wasn't bad looking himself. the first time me and lauren went in there he was looking pretty bored and then like 8 ten year old boys ran in there and the shortest screamed at the top pf his lungs "STEAL SHIT!!!!" they all just started running around. they never actually stole anything but they set off the alarm a few times and were getting on the guys nerves. there were only three poeple working there and they all seemed to be about my age. they were chasing the kids around. Each of them picked up a ten year old and threw them out of the store and then locked them out. my and lauren were once again laughing SO hard. the guy working there smiled apolagetically and after lauren got a shark tooth neckalace it was time for us to go. we went bacl to the hotel for the night and got ready to meet josh and dallas on the beach. josh and dallas were two guy we had met earlier in the day who were both 17 and staying at out hotel. josh wasn't completely bad looking, in fact he was sort of cute but i wasn't that drawn to dallas. turns out josh was hawaiian which would exaplin the exreme tan. that and he was also a lifeguard. By the time we got back they had already waited and headed to thier room for the night. we had never really accomplished a time but that was okay because we knew we'd see them tomorrow. they weren't the most interesting people we'd ever met anyways. the next day we ran into them and only said hi. but sitting in the pool complaining about how warm it was (we couldn't swim laps in warm water) we started talking to a guy named devon. big black guy, football player. but as nice as ever. he was in shock when we told him our school don't have football teams. apparently in alabama where hes from thats his LIFE! i was talking about RO and to him she sounds like the most awsome person. He couldn't believe all the shit me and my friends do for fun. later we said our good buyes because it was time for my family to go grab lunch. its wierd but on vacation i always just sort of forget about eating because im so busy. but luckily my stomach always reminds me. (speaking of which, im a lil hungry right now. excuse me while i go grab some food...... thats better. im back) so after grabbing lunch we drove a round a little bit because it was raining and the beach is only mildly fun when its raining. i wanted to go parasailing but they didn't let anyone do that when it was the slightest bit coudy so i never got to go. that night i went out on to the beach with my sketch book. i sketched out a beautiful beach scene. i kept noticing this guy who was looking over at me ocassionaly. After a while i put my headset on, got absorbed in teh drawing and the music and forgot about him. about 15 minutes later i was shocked to look up and find him standing right next to me looking at my drawing, beer bottle in his right hand. he was most deffinently drunk. he laughed when he noticed that i sort of jumped when i realized he was there. "so, you're an artist are you?" he asked. "well something like.........." was all i answered. am i an artist? do you have to go to an arts university and get a diploma to officially be an artist? thats what i plan on doing in the future but i still wan'st sure. "i guess im an artsit in training" i grinnined as i thought to myself what a gay thing to say. He had to much of a buzz going to notice though. "in training?" he repeated "your still in college then?" his face fell a little. "no............" i hesitated. this guy would be shocked when he found out i was only halfway done with high school. most people here couldn't believe i was only 16. most of them thought i was at least 18-20. "im a junior........" i hesistated more. this guy wasn't that good looking. and he was drunk and he was most definenlt around 25 years old. "...... in high school" he raised his eyebrow. "o right then... " he was mumbling now. "i guess ill see you round then." he walked off plainly dissapointed i wans't older or at least embarrassed hed been hitting on a 16 year old. i finished my sketch and headed back to the hotel room. i felt his eyes on my back all the time i was walking back to the hotel. i took a looooooooooong hot shower to get all of the slat water out of my hair. and enjoyed every minute of it. i hardly ever get more than a 3 minute shower on vacation. i was the last one to crawl into bed. i had blankets piled on top of me. i was freezing all night. i was right next to the air vent ( i don't get along with air conditioning as it is) and it always has to be set to a certain temperature to keep out the humidity and harsh salt smell. i personally like the warmth, humidity and slat smell but it doesn't matter because my family does NOT. so i froze all night long. by morning when i woke up i had pulled the blankets completely over my head, which i do in my sleep when i get really cold. i jumped out of bed, changed into a swim suit and shorts and went outside on the balcony to eat breakfast. its one thing to sleep in the cold but i don't like eating in the cold too. at this point i was seriously considering sleeping out on the balcony the next night. all i'd have to do is lay a blanket down and take my pillow out there. my dad wouldn't let me. it would have been nice too. after breakfast i enjoyed the last day there hanging out on the strip with lauren. we were walking the last half mile to the hotel on the side of the main road and some guys rolled down thier windows as they drove past and threw some mardi gras beads at us, which landed right at my feet. and then they sped off. i laughed and lauren rolled her eyes. she was getting sick of how attentive guys were to us there. i slept one more night in that ice box of a hotel room before we left the next day. me and lauren had some hena done on the way out. i got a chineese sympbol done that means 'snake' because i was born in the chineese year of the snake. lauren also had a chineese symbol done but not her year. she doesn't like hers. its the year of the monkey. so she got sacrifice done. after that we were offiacially on our way to new orleans lousiana for the junior olympics. We had each qualified in 4 events. shes a lot etter than me because she swim all year round. i only swim for 2 monthes out of the year. coach larry used to try to get my on his team but im just not into the year round thing he finally got the hint after about a year. Lauren however takes swimming very seriously. i just do it for fun so its a miracly that i qualified in 4 events never the less, 2. its hard to do that unless you swim year round so of course i was in the bottom standings. i actually did pretty good in my 5 ofr but that was the only thing i did good on. my realays were really good though. while wating for one event me and kristin medly were talking about wat a drug place south east missouri was and i noticed this really cute guy sitting next to the wall. he hadn't been there a minute ago. he was only like 5 feet away from me and i could help notic how tall all the guys standing along that wall for tier relay were. but he especially caught my eye. he sat down on the table next to him while and i kept glancing over at him while talking to kristin. i pointed out to her how tall all the guys seemed. she just laughed and said she had noticed that too. He got up off of the table and stood up again. i wanted to talk to him. so iturned to none of the guys imparticualr and said "all of you guys need to sit down because you're making me fell short!" most of them laughed at me, one of the boys from virginia gave me a funny look. The boy i had been watching turned to me and said, "well i was sitting down a little bit ago, but then i decided to stand..." we said it with a little bit of an accent. one i'd heard before but could quite place it. "where are you from?" i asked him. "well i was born in australia," he started, "my mum is an australian citzan and my dad is american so i've got both citizanships. im swimming for suadi arabia. thats where i live right now" wow. australian. that was it. no wonder i recognized it. my aunt is half australian and half greek. we joked about how short he was making me feel for a little bit more and then it was time for my relay to go swim. i realized when i got out of the water that i still hadn't traded shirts or caps yet with anyone. its an AAU traditioin to trade your team shirt with someone frome a different team. i grabbed my swim cap to trade. and headed back to the starting blocks just to see the guy id been talking todive into the water. he was FAST. But his stroke was so slow i wondered how he did suck a slow stroke and still went so fast. when he had finished and gotten out of the water and walked up to him. "here" i said holding out the swim cap for my team. " i haven't traded my shirt or cap yet and since its sort of a tradition i was wondering if youd trade with me." he took the cap and smiled. he had such a nice smile. " i don't think i have any caps to trade you. but i do have some shirts back at the hotel. Did you qualify for finals tonight bacause if you did ill bring tham then." i coudn't qualify for finals if my life depended on it. " no i didn't qualify but my sister did, ill be coming to watchs her" i had no choice to come watch her. but now even if i would have had a choice i would have come just to see him. "good. ill bring it then." he decided. We went back to the hotel so laurn could get some rest before finlas and i could take a shower. we went back to the finals that night and i spent most of the time hanging out with the guy i gave the swim cap to. he introduced himself as David Curtiss. I didn't know it at the time but he was THE best swimmer there. David was completl;y amazing. as a swimmer and as a person. i couldn't tell a single joke though because he'd already heard all of them. he even had to finish one for me because i completly messed it up. I've never met a gy like him. he could make me smile everytime i saw him. he traded me two of his saudi shirts and i ended up giving him my team shirt as well. one cap for two shirts was hardly a fair trade. the last night at finals i cheered him on for his 100 meter freestyle, and the whole time i was thinking about how tonight may be the last time i see him and how even though id only known him for two days id really miss him. David took the gold for the 100 freestyle. before i left i got him e-mail adress and he gave me a hug good bye. when he did i thought he would never let go. and at the same time i didn't want him to. first thing i did when i got home was e-mail him. By the way, Happy Birthday David, if you read this. well now im home after an 8 hour drive. and i need to get to bed so. good night. i've got to get back to my regular summer life now.

chlorine filled summer

this summer so far its all been the same: wake up at 6am to go to swim team practice which starts at 6:45 and ends at 8:30 am. normally we only swim either just a mile or if the coaches are in a bad mood it can be up to 2 miles! after that i take a short break before i teach swim lessons. the first session is from 9:45-10:30 the second is from 10:30-11:15. you'd think that would be enough chlorine for one day but no. after that i go home and eat a quick lunch and often bike the 3 miles back to the pool to lifeguard from 1-6pm. and then bike back home. when i look at all this on the computer screen it seems like i do too much but then if i think about it it feels good to do all of that daily. (except for the wekends when i have swim meets and church) i mean i get up early which makes the day seem a little bit longer and THAT in turn makes the whole summer longer. and i know that if im going to make it through the day i have to eat right. (i still don't drink right! i have the problem of only drinking about a half glass of water each day. if i drink anything else it might be only a half glass of milk) it makes me feel alot better when the day is done. it makes me aprectiate falling into bed and sleeping. i still can NOT believe im going to the junior olympics on FOUR events. i mean i always qualify but itsthe matter that i actually get to go this year for a change of pace!!!! well i need a lil sleep before tomorrows long day! maybe next time ill actually type something interesting.

how people see me.

Have you ever noticed that every body sees you as a difefrent person. People do that with me. but its not so much who i am to them its who people are that make me act the way i do around them. my parents thinks im really irrisponsible but they've never seen me at work. all they ever see are my grades. (and how clean my room is but thats besides the point) and then someone at a swim meet a few weeks ago on the PBST told me that at every swim meet im at they always see me smiling, or talking to someone and that i seem like a really friendly person. my swim team coach thinks im crazy (in a good way) because at one point i was gone for like a week because i had swimmers ear (an ear infection you get from being in the water too much like me!) and then i came back and i had purple hair. my boss thinks im dependable because i always do what im told to do the way i was told to do it at work and i've saved two people. My friend seth thinks im like the blodest person alive cause i always end up doing things without thinking around him and it looks like the stupidest things in the world. like he found out that i put the phone in the refrigerator and lost it for liek 3 days (ok i can NOT be the only one whos done that!) and my friend farra........... ok most people think the same way as seth......farra does anyways. but i guess not everyones going to always see me the same way, thats why they all treat me differently. which in turn i act differently around them. i guess its just a cycle! well i gotta go........ i meght type more later if i can think of something..... but thinking just hurts so much sometimes, i try not to do it that often.

accomplished a back dive (still working on inverted)
got hit on by a good 30 guys (no, sorry the eight year olds at the Scott City pool don't count)

WENT to the junior olympics which was held in New Orleans
went for too many joy rides to count
went canoeing with farra
got whistled at by a fourty year old guy (Eeeeew!)

When I was in my teens, and still at secondary school here in London, I and a group of friends had developed a passion for fantasy art and comics. I picked up a book called "The Studio" which featured four artists: Jeffrey Jones, Barry Windsor-Smith, Michael Kaluta and Berni Wrightson. Of these artists, Jeffrey Jones was my favourite because his art spoke to me on a level which echoed my passion for the historical and romantic in ART. Whilst my early influences were from Graeco-Roman history and mythology, "The Studio" was to introduce me to celtic mythology and its influences.

Ever since then I've had a love for celtic art, crafts and mythology, and also for Arthurian legends. Much of this passion for art has manifested itself in a passion for collecting art books and artistically rendered comics. Two men who worked (in my mind, undeservedly) on the outskirts of fame - even for the sort of work they did - have died in the past couple days, and I am so very saddened to hear of their deaths. Tonino Delli Colli, who worked with Pasolini, Fellini, and Benigni, died on the 17th - as I've seen only one of Pasolini's films, and none of late Fellini, I haven't encountered much of Colli's cinematography yet. But his work on The Gospel According to St. Matthew is outstanding, as he treats the Jesus story as a beautiful and casually dazzling documentary. The film I love him best for, though, is Sergio Leone's masterpiece (I try to reserve that word for a select few movies, but this is one of them), Once Upon a Time in the West. Film Forum's been showing the trailer a lot recently, and, screwing the NY film festival, I'm pumped for getting the chance to see this in the wide-screen; it's the cinematography (and Morricone's operatic music) that's unforgettable.

Also gone is George Fasel, at 67, who kept one of the very best blogs around. I remember coming across it a very short while ago when I was googling Anna Karina and found filmbrain's blog, and then clicked on the first link. They were the first two movie blogs I read, and they've remained my favorites, for their very casual generosity and love (nowhere will you ever find the cruel discipline of a printed columnist, which is why I have admired them so much - they have utilized the form better than I ever could), and also, well, because they derived their titles from my favorite director. George Fasel was more of an essayist, however, and his site was something of a rather failed guide (my fault, not his) for me on how to handle this site for the summer (I'll be semi-signing off myself when I go back into the fame of a campus newspaper), but it was a pleasure to hear his voice.

The Art Renewal Centre is one of my favourite online galleries. It promotes and provides examples of art which features epic themes and in a classical style. It avoids modern or new art which is abstract, in form and nature. Whilst some of you may not agree with their philosophy, you will doubtless enjoy many of the classic pieces of art found on this site. The following 12 points from this mission statement, accurately communicates their philosophy and goals.

1. To create the largest on-line Museum on the internet, with hundreds of thousands of oversized high quality images of all the known works of the greatest painters and sculptors in human history, cross referenced to the largest encyclopedic online art reference library of historical texts, essays, biographies and articles.

2. To promote a return of training, standards and excellence in the visual arts.

3. To provide responsible views opposing those of the current art establishment when warranted, especially as expressed in critiques of current art exhibitions, and in aesthetic philosophy.

4. To disseminate the rich artistic heritage of 2500 years of accumulated knowledge in creating traditional, realistic images touching upon universal and timeless themes.

8. To provide a forum for dialogue and exchange of expert information among educators scholars, curators, collectors and artists.

9. To promote scholarship and research on the artists of the past and the rediscovery and preservation of their techniques and methods.

day off

i don't normally listen to what my mom says but there is one piece of advice that she gave me and i believe i could LIVE by it. "Go ahead and treat yourself. Sometimes the small things can keep you happy for ages" cool, i can go with that. My mom would see "treating herself" as a day at the spa. thats just her a idea of a "me day" but i see a treat as a new CD. it doesn't have to be a shopping day or a new manicure, it can be a new CD or just time somehwhere that makes you happy with friend that make you happy. thats all it takes.So a few days ago i treated my self, but doing it takes breaking alot of rules and laws. but when i came home at the end of the day, i couldn't have been happier. when i got up in the morning every one was leaving and left probably the biggest list of chores ive had in a while. but instead i decided "screw it. todays my day." i can't drive (legally) but i grabbed the keys to my truck and went for a drive, and cranked my favorite song so far up i was afraid i was gonna bust the speakers. my hairs naturaly blonde but i like to be creative so i grabbed my momney and went inside target to get some purple hair dye because i've wanted to dye my hair for a while why not just go for something extreme? so i went home and dyed my hair. micheal asked me to meet him down by fathers arms fellowship to go skating but he lives closer and by the time i got there he wasn't there so i figured he had split to go swimming with jeremiah or something. i grabbed a drink at casey's general and skated home. on the way home i broke my dads rule about no texting ppl too much and texted one of my friends about 15 times back and forth and we decided we'd go hang out. but when i got home my mom flipped when she saw my hair and told me i wasn't gonna be going anywhere while my hair was still purple and made me go wash it quite a few times. (she wanted tme to try and get all the color out and didn't believe me when i sed it wasn't possible. so then i went and dried my hair and got a phone call from the same friend as earlier and decided we'd meet up at the gas station and hang out by the mississippi river. even though i was grounded from leaving the house i snuck out and walked the easy mile to the gas station. they picked me up right when i got there (after i got me a sodee cause damn i was thirsty). we drove out to a place in teh middle of nowhere by the river and he taught me how to play a card game. i got to just chill out and relax. i kept looking at the sky because it was so pretty and i kept wondering if i could paint that because i love to paint with water colours. as the night went one it got better (except for all the bug bites) and then after my friend sped me home i snuck back in and listened to my favorite CD (for now!) i've been in a pretty good mood since. so i guess we all need a day for ourselves ocassionally where we break all the rules because sometimes breaking the rules is worth a little happiness. i can't wait to have another "me day". and no it won't be spent at the spa. lol.

Le Voyage à travers l'impossible (Georges Méliès, 1905) / Beginnings (Jim Davis, 1955)

I haven't seen any other Méliès films, so be warned that any comments I make specifically regarding this movie may and probably do apply to some of his others as well - but for those who have not seen Le Voyage à Travers L'impossible, do so immediately, as it is one of the most wildly and whimsically beautiful and, most importantly, hilarious things I've ever encountered. Which means what, exactly? Essentially, Voyage, which follows the oft-failed attempts of a group of intrepid high-society explorers to probe the depths and corners of the universe, is both a take-off on Jules Verne and (so sorry) a movie usually about ships taking off; under Méliès' direction, the thing soars.

Méliès films in almost 2-dimensional panels, each shot a scene, with all the actors and equipment facing the camera at all times. He mixes and matches real actors and jolty animation (for just about anything that's not a real person) seamlessly, hand-tinting each frame - some would say badly - with shades that seem slightly off, so that the animation seems more realistic and the actors less so, making it almost impossible to tell what was filmed and what was created. There is a tremendous freedom Méliès alllows his characters (which include many of the props) within the structure and stricture of each tableau - in one scene, for example, characters leave the frame to go board a train in the background, which soon after leaves the frame itself. In another, as a group of the high-class elite eat dinner in a grand hall, the same train comes barrelling through the walls stage left and exists the same way stage right.

This is special-effects action-packed moviemaking at its best; in the brief 24 minutes Méliès necessitates for his trickery, the voyagers fly into the sun (waking it up), freeze into ice-cubes, crash thousands of feet, go deep-sea exploring, etc. etc. This is why Eisenstein envied animation, and the roots are clearly set for Terry Gilliam's similarly ground-breaking work some 65 years later for Monty Python with his cut-out (paper?) figurines.

Meanwhile, Méliès' cut-out 4th wall of the ship (so that we can see the interior, even when it's in flight) reminded me of the more recent, and also remarkably similar and heavily underrated (and equally two-dimensional) The Life Aquatic , which also - as Buster Keaton, Busby Berkley, Jonas Mekas, and Steven Spielberg, to hastily name some archetypical American directors, have also all done - treats its characters as little more than objects to inspire magnificent visuals. Likewise Robert Zemeckis' brilliant and beautiful The Polar Express 3-D , (it too, is not really very three-dimensional, but should be seen that way) which grows on me every day (and which, let's get this out of the way, goes to great lengths to question its own premise that "seeing is believing" - a statement that any moviegoer would, like Zemeckis, love to believe, but obviously never could). Zemeckis treats his train the same way Méliès treats his, and it is debatable which one is a worse-designed and worse-operated piece of machinary (Zemeckis' train is something of an update on Who Framed Roger Rabbit?'s Benny the cab); both directors use the premise of an unwieldy vehicle as an excuse to send their movie anywhere and everywhere they want.

It may be a coincidence, but Zemeckis' method for shooting Express is also essentially an update on Méliès - digitally converting real people into Zemeckis' far more dynamic digital world is really just the latest version of rotoscoping (and a vast improvement on the lifeless stuff Richard Linklater's been trying), and Méliès was basically doing the same thing when he cut out his people, hand-painted them, and threw them into his animation. All of which I hope provides something to think about when free-form visual extravaganzas like Aquatic and Express start getting hated on for lacking those constraining factors like character, plot, and emotion, although Aquatic definitely deserves some blame for feigning them.

Because I saw it in the same program - an experimental tribute to 1905 (also the year of some Einsteinian advances), I'll throw in a word (or 300) about Jim Davis' stunning 10 minute (or so) "experimental" film Beginnings, which takes its camera throw some sort of light-show factory, as rays twist and turn and refract and disappear. If you do see some connection with the Méliès piece, I'd be interested in what you have to say - I didn't see any, except for maybe that sense of fleeting that breathless 16-frame-a-second silent films also create. Anyway, there's a beautiful quote from Raymond Chandler on the death of his long-time wife that I like very much, but never completely understood: "For 30 years, ten months and four days, [my wife] was the light of my life, my whole ambition. Anything I did was just the fire for her to warm her hands at. That is all there is to say. She was the music heard faintly on the edge of sound." It's not much of an explanation (or review), and it sounds pretentious as hell, but Davis' stuff is, I'd say, images glimpsed faintly on the edge of light. Pretty ones.

There are some very good creatives who post their work at this web community and portal. With well over a million members wordwide, and having been around since it was launched in August 7th, 2000, it is a healthy and thriving community. With a name like deviantART, you'd think it would be seriously warped in nature, and whilst there are creatives who do have a distinctly dark overtone to their work, it definitely has a much broader creative appeal.

The site was created to serve as an artistic community and also to cater to the skinning requirements of DMusic. You can find the full story told here by one of the co-creators. dA now plays host to artists, writers, designers, photographers, skinners and other creatives. Cobra Woman (Robert Siodmak, 1944)

A camp classic, replete with background sets that look (and perhaps are) half-completed storyboards, a king cobra ostensibly made by Fisher-Price and attached to a turn-table, verb-challenged island natives, and a potential transvestite chimp named Cocoa who threads a needle during a climactic escape scene, simply because he can. Really, I should be reviewing the A-side of the double feature, Busby Berkley's intermittently brilliant (and I mean brilliant) The Gang's All Here (how many movies are there that serve solely as a vehicle for a director?), but the only way to do that film justice is to see it, so let's look at why you must see Cobra Woman.

The plot's standard: boy (Jon Hall) meets girl (Maria Montez), boy falls in love with girl, boy loses girl to Cobra Island where she as the rightful queen must reclaim the throne from her evil dancing twin sister (Montez, with accent), boy falls in love with evil dancing twin sister, boy conviently realizes evil dancing twin sister is nothing more than an evil dancing twin sister when she tries to kill him after a beautifully filmed underwater make-out session, boy and humorous companions get trapped and escape multiple times before killing evil dancing twin sister, boy gets girl again.

Watch (and watch out for!) Montez' sexy epileptic dance as the cobra speaks through her to choose who must die, thrill to a daring escape as Hall tosses a couple pebbles up onto his captor's face to knock him out, cheer as Cocoa & co. pull their patent (not to mention pat) shenanigans to win against the enemies - and over your hearts. Seriously, if you're a guy and you're not spending this entire movie tracking Montez' rather prominent chest(s!), then, well, you're probably the ideal viewer for the film, at least based on the audience I saw it with.

accomplished a back dive (still working on inverted)
got hit on by a good 30 guys (no, sorry the eight year olds at the Scott City pool don't count)

this summer I...

went to an avril lavigne concert
got a job as a lifeguard
saved two drowning kids
went to panama city
got a really dark tan
qualified for 4 events in the junior olympics
taught swim lessons (all of my kids except for one passed!)
Met a really hot guy at JOs (yup david you know who im talkin bout :-P)
spent LOTS of time hangin with my best friends
got my wisdom teeth taken out
ate benets at cafe du monde
had really awsome birthday party
got to see my cousin laura
dyed my hair puple
My sorta cousin Elisha, put green yellow, and black streaks in my hair
went to the mix only three times (not that many cute boys there)
me and farra have spent at least every other saturday at the mall
farra helped me get in plenty of driving time;-)
got a BB time in my 50m freestyle
got a hena tattoo
accomplished a back dive (still working on inverted)
got hit on by a good 30 guys (no, sorry the eight year olds at the Scott City pool don't count)
learned tarot
WENT to the junior olympics which was held in New Orleans
went for too many joy rides to count
went canoeing with farra
got whistled at by a fourty year old guy (Eeeeew!)
dropped three seconds on my 100 meter backstroke :-D
